Each year, technology creates more and more products that usually wow the world. And it seems like the technology of this year would not let itself be left behind from those of 2016. Because of that, here are our top 10 picks of the most impressive breakthrough of 2017.

#10 Rebirth of Nokia 3310

Comeback is real for Nokia 3310! It’s been 17 years since the release of what has been hailed as “the icon”. HMD Global, the Finnish manufacturing company which uses the rights for the marketing of the Nokia brand, has formally unveiled the phone during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain on February 27, 2017.

#9 Paying with your Face

The face-detection technology is now authorizing payments, providing access to facilities, and even tracking down criminals in China! Facial recognition has existed for decades, but it is only recently that it has been accurate enough to be used in securing financial transactions. The latest versions use deep learning, an artificial-intelligence technique that is especially effective for image recognition. The technology makes a computer zero in on the facial features of person, which is a more reliable way of identification.

#8 Facebook launches Watch, its new platform for original TV shows

Say hello to Watch, a new video platform on Facebook which features original TV shows, including content funded by the giant social network itself.

Launched on August 10 to a small number of users in the US, Watch is a revamped and pumped up version of the US-only Video tab. Through Watch, Facebook will serve video content for iOS, Android, desktop, laptop and TV applications.

#7 Newspapers Arrange with Facebook and Google

Facebook and Google now dominates the world in terms of online advertising and spreading news. People now rely on these sites because of their accessibility, in contrast to the costs and effort of buying an actual newspaper to read. This causes the newspaper industries to lose readers and advertising revenues. Because of that, newspaper groups join forces to call for an investigation over Facebook and Google’s role on the vast spread of fake news.

#6 360-degree Selfie

Inexpensive cameras that make spherical images are opening a new era in photography and changing the way people share stories!

Samsung’s new Gear 360 camera was released on May 25, 2017 to New York Times and Reuters journalists who are producing 360° news coverage. On Apr. 21, 2017, the newest model in the Ricoh Theta 360° Camera Series, which shoots 4K Video, was developed. Ricoh put the image sensors on the camera’s sides instead of behind its lenses, making its thin shape possible. On August 1, 2017 the Kodak Pixpro SP360 4k was also released. It can be mounted on a drone to produce aerial 360° videos.

#5 Self-Driving Truck

The self-driving taxi and the electric long-haul truck will arrive in 2019, marking a turning point in the transportation revolution. Walmart and J.B. Hunt, two of the biggest shipping companies, have placed orders for Tesla’s new electric semi-truck. CEO Elon Musk promises that it can go up to 500 miles, hauling around 80,000 pounds on a single charge.

#4 iPhone X

The newest version of iPhone is here. Launched on November 3, 2017, the iPhone X is Apple’s new flagship gadget: a 10th-anniversary phone featuring a 5.8-inch OLED display, facial recognition and 3D camera functionality, a glass body, and an A11 Bionic processor.

#3 5G Wireless Technology

Running short of dramatically new phone designs, leaders of the world’s wireless industry agree that their next big idea is 5G, shorthand for the fifth generation of networks they expect to run by 2020.

On October 17, 2016, Qualcomm has announced the first 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50, as the first commercial 5G mobile chipset. In a later demonstration, which took place on August 25, 2017, Samsung and KDDI, a Japanese telecommunications company, successfully completed a handover trial at 192km per hour between multiple base stations, using the experimental 28GHz radio frequency band system, built at Everland Speedway in Yongin, South Korea. The trial also successfully demonstrated 5G data communications with a vehicle travelling at 205km per hour, which was also the fastest record so far in the world.

#2 Xbox One X

On the morning of Nov. 7, it seemed that the impossible had just happened: A sign outside the Yodobashi Camera electronics store in Tokyo’s Akihabara district read “Xbox One X Sold Out.”

Xbox One X is the most powerful game console on the market today. The high-end model was unveiled in June and released this November. It features major hardware upgrades focused on enabling games to be rendered at 4k resolution.
