Social Media: Back-up Your SEO Campaign

Social Media for SEO

When we say “Social Media,” we usually think of Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, YouTube, Wordpress, StumbleUpon and the like. These are the common examples of Social Media, but the term is broad in meaning and has many definitions that can be found on the Internet. One definition is, it is “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content” (Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein). In other reference, it states that social media includes the various online technology tools that enable people to communicate easily via the internet to share information and resources.” Therefore, if we are going to sum up those definitions, we can define Social Media as the coined term for online platforms or tools used for social interaction.

Social Media comes in different forms. It can be social networking sites like Myspace and Friendster, and online bookmarking sites such as Delicious, Reddit and Digg.  Media Sharing sites like Vimeo, Photobucket and Flicker are also examples of Social Media. On the other hand, blogsites such as Tumblr, Blogspot and TypePad are being considered as Social Media, too. But today, Social Media is no longer just about online socialization, marketing and promotion. Social Media also plays an important role in search engine optimization.

Nowadays, the SEO game plan is obviously changing. Search engine optimization does not only include link building, use of related keywords, Meta tags and description etc., because Social Media is now incorporated in the SEO strategy. The use of social media in aiding SEO campaign has a direct effect on search engine results because most major search engines give preference to the number of times that the content is being shared on social media sites. Therefore, it becomes inevitable for companies to making use of Social Media as part of their SEO movement.

So, if you are considering using Social Media to have an online advantage over your competitors, you may want to mull over some of the Do’s and Don’ts when incorporating the Social Media into your SEO operation.

1. Create a Social Media Profile

DO: Create a business profile using different Social Media sites. Whether it is a Facebook Business Page, a Twitter or Google+ account or a YouTube video channel, its potential to rank on search engines is always high. Thus, if you create a business profile using different forms of Social Media, you are increasing the possibility of improving your brand’s online presence.

DON’T: Do not create a Social Media profile that you cannot even give time to update or don’t have the intention to invest time on it. Remember, you are using social media to aid your SEO campaign by making it a better community for your business and customers, but not to create a profile and keep it inactive forever.

2. Share Useful and Relevant Contents

DO: Do maximize the use of Social Media for SEO by also sharing useful and relevant contents from other people. Search engines like Google and Bing use author authority, in which the number of likes, +1, re-tweets or shares from reliable Social Media users are being looked at to influence the search results.

DON’T: Do not be a Social Media spammer. Avoid posting too many contents that talk solely about your business because it will appear that you are forcing your potential clients to buy your products or use your services. Instead, use social media to connect with them by answering their comments or joining the conversation in your network rather than just creating a link trap to your site, be an author authority that provides rich contents to your network.

3. Include Keywords

DO: Do incorporate your keywords when sharing posts, links, videos or tweets in your Social Media accounts. Bear in mind that the use of keywords is one of the main activities of SEO, thus, you can optimize your posts via keywords. You may put a hash tag to your keyword when tweeting or put your keywords to the description and tags of your videos or articles. By doing this, your content can be indexed by search engines.

DON’T: Like a general rule in optimizing your web content, avoid stuffing your post or tweet with too much keyword that your consumers can no longer understand the whole content.

4. Link your Website

DO: You are using social media to aid the SEO campaign of your website and increase your site’s traffic, therefore don’t forget to link your site in your Social Media accounts. You can do this by putting the URL address in your Social Media profiles and by sharing contents that forwards to your blog.

DON’T: Do not put the whole content of your article when sharing it to your Social Media page. Because if you do, the user will read the whole post in your Social Media page and won’t go further to your website or blog. Instead, put catchy clips or summary to your posts that will drive the consumers from your Social Media page to your website or blog.

What I personally like to do to get hits a-comin’ is do my best to write retweetable stuff. (If you’re on Facebook, use appropriate jargon.) I’m a humor guy, so I do it by writing funny lines that people like to comment on and pass around. I’m not a huge fan of the normal stuff social media is used for, so I find that having an interesting way to express things gets people to sit up and notice.

Well, duh? Social media, in case you didn’t know, are actually made to be used for community groups. In my opinion, the nature of social media sites and their purpose, are mixture of both marketing and public relations. It’s a way for businesses to actually get in touch with their customers on a personal level, without as much hassle as when they do actual PR.
